Olive oil

Whereas olive oil is a new business area for Companhia das Lezírias, the production of olives is not a recent one.

At the beginning of the 20th century, more precisely in 1910, and under the supervision of Dr. Cincinnato da Costa, Companhia das Lezírias planted an olive grove with about 200,000 trees.

Today we can still find traces of that olive grove which was planted between Catapereiro and Monte das Cachopas.

As the olive trees were affected by diseases, and because market demand was scarce, the activity became of little interest to the company. Today, the location and advanced age of those trees makes it very expensive to recover them.

As the interest for olive oil began to grow in the market, we decided to resume the activity by investing in technologies. Two olive groves were planted with different varieties of olives, allowing the company to reactivate the production.

At the moment, there are 71 hectares of olive grove.

The varieties of olives produced are Galega and Cobrançosa, both Portuguese, and Arbequina, which is Spanish, using intensive and super-intensive production methods.
