The beginning of the wine business in Companhia das Lezírias was in 1881, the year where the vineyard of charneca de Catapereiro was created. That area kept on growing until 1934, when the vineyard reached its maximum potential with about 400 hectares. The main types of grape produced were Periquita (castelão) and Bastardo.
As the years passed, the vineyard was always being restructured and currently Companhia das Lezírias has about 130 hectares of vineyard. 65% of that area is covered by red grapes and 35% by white grapes.

Among the red grapes, the most common variety is Alicante Bouchet, and then we have Castelão, Trincadeira, Alicante-Bouschet, Aragonez, Touriga-Nacional, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Touriga-Franca, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão. The white grapes planted are Fernão Pires, Trincadeira das Pratas, Arinto, Roupeiro, Tália, Verdelho and Vital.
We have been restructuring the vineyard without underestimating the Portuguese grapes and planting at the same time, several other types of grapes that best suit in this area.

In what concerns the wines, our range is organized the following way: the wines with the designation “Companhia das Lezírias” are original from "Do Tejo" region and produced essentially with Castelão grapes for the red wine and Fernão Pires grapes for the white wine. The red wines of this range are stored using new wood from American and French oaks, this way, they gather a unique set of characteristics which are typical from Tejo.

The wines from this region are called “Catapereiro” and they gather our regional grapes plated in our vineyard. The regional red wine is sometimes selected (in special years) and stored in French oak casks. After this process it is bottled originating “Catapereiro Escvolha”. These wines are stockier and they also have a bigger potential when compared to the other wines which are also produced by Companhia das Lezírias.

Our table wine is called “Senhora de Alcamé” and it is elaborated from other lots of wines produced by Companhia das Lezírias that aren’t sold by the usual trademarks.
Companhia das Lezírias is a founding member of Rota da Vinha e do Vinho do Ribatejo (Vineyard Route of the region of Ribatejo) and it has undoubtedly an excellent location that is surely reflected in the quality of our wines which has also been admired by the journalists and wine critics but above all by our consumers.
